Oklo Advances Nuclear Power Initiatives and Funding

Oklo, a U.S. company developing micro nuclear reactors, is close to securing a power purchase agreement with the US Air Force for a pilot reactor at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska, producing up to 75 MW of electricity and heat. The deal is not final yet, and Oklo plans to reapply for an NRC operating license in 2025, aiming for approval in 2027. The project has faced regulatory and proliferation concerns, but it aligns with recent U.S. government efforts to boost small nuclear reactors for military and energy use.

"U.S. Air Force Embraces Fast Microreactors for Clean and Resilient Power"

The U.S. Air Force has selected Oklo's liquid metal-cooled fast reactor for its first nuclear microreactor pilot program at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. The program aims to explore the potential of microreactors to provide reliable and flexible carbon-free energy for remote military installations. Oklo's Aurora Powerhouse, a compact passive fast-spectrum reactor, will be sited, designed, built, owned, and commercially operated by Oklo. The Air Force will execute a land lease and a 30-year fixed price power purchase agreement once Oklo obtains a combined operating license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The pilot project could play a larger role in future defense energy procurement, according to the assistant secretary of Defense for Energy, Installations, and Environment.
