Texas Researcher Honored with MJFF Award for Parkinson's Breakthrough

Claudio Soto, a Texas scientist, has been awarded the Robert A. Pritzker Prize by the Michael J. Fox Foundation for his pioneering work in Parkinson's research. Soto developed the alpha-synuclein seed amplification assay (AlphaSyn-SAA), a technique that detects misfolded alpha-synuclein in cerebrospinal fluid, enabling early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. This breakthrough has the potential to transform clinical trials and improve early detection and treatment of Parkinson's and other neurodegenerative diseases.

New Test Identifies Parkinson's Biomarker with High Accuracy

The Michael J Fox Foundation has announced a breakthrough test that can detect a biomarker for Parkinson's disease with 90% accuracy, which may be able to indicate disease before typical symptoms appear. The test, called the alpha-synuclein seed amplification assay (αSyn-SAA), looks for synuclein pathology and was developed as part of the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI). The biomarker will allow scientists to define Parkinson's disease biologically, opening up new routes in diagnostics and potential therapies. The study is published in The Lancet Neurology.

"Michael J. Fox celebrates Parkinson's biomarker breakthrough"

The Michael J. Fox Foundation has announced a significant breakthrough in Parkinson's research, with the discovery of a biomarker that can detect dysfunction in the protein that goes haywire in Parkinson’s disease. The breakthrough comes in the form of a spinal fluid test, which was enabled through an effort led by the foundation for more than a decade, the Parkinson’s Progression Markers Initiative. The test's strength in detecting Parkinson’s at the molecular level, even before any symptoms have shown up, is off the charts.
