"New Study Reveals Brain Molecular Changes in PTSD and Depression"

A study by McLean Hospital and collaborators reveals shared and distinct molecular changes in the brains and blood of individuals with PTSD and MDD, highlighting key pathways and potential biomarkers. This research, involving multi-omics analysis of 231 individuals, offers insights into targeted treatments and real-time blood-based diagnostics for stress-related disorders.

The Impact of Stress on Emotional Behaviors through Immune System Enzymes

Chronic psychosocial stress can lead to increased circulating myeloid cells and pro-inflammatory cytokines, affecting the brain and potentially leading to stress-related neuropsychiatric disorders such as major depressive disorder (MDD). A study using a mouse model of psychosocial stress found that stress-susceptible mice showed increased numbers of pro-inflammatory monocytes in the circulation and brain, along with elevated levels of matrix metalloproteinase 8 (MMP8). These findings were also observed in patients with MDD, suggesting a potential link between peripheral immune-derived MMP8 and stress susceptibility. The study highlights the role of peripheral myeloid cells in stress-related disorders and provides insights into the mechanisms by which these immune changes affect neuronal function and behavior.
