Geraint Thomas loses the Giro d'Italia to Primož Roglič by 14 seconds in the stage 20 mountain time trial. Thomas had raced an almost flawless Giro to this point, but the wickedly steep gradients of Monte Lussari proved his undoing. Although Thomas conceded three seconds on stage 19, it didn't feel as though he had surrendered much momentum in this contest. Thomas will start Sunday's stage to Bergamo 1:41 down on Armirail but still in control of his overall hopes, with his rivals still in the game for overall victory. Ineos Grenadiers' team directeur sportif Matteo Tosatto said the decision to let the maglia go was a sign of their confidence and control, not one of weakness.

He put 22 seconds into Filippo Ganna and 43 seconds into Primoz Roglic. Evenepoel produced a historic performance to take his first stage win at the Italian Grand Tour and make a huge statement as the favourite to lift the Trofeo Senza Fine in Rome in three weeks' time. The time gaps were eye-watering, with the Bahrain Victorious duo of Jack Haig and Damiano Caruso losing around 90 seconds to Evenepoel.
