Mark Cavendish wins the final stage of the Giro d'Italia in Rome, possibly his last race in Italy before retirement. He hugged his teammates and staff beyond the finish and praised Geraint Thomas for helping him with a high-speed lead-out. Cavendish confirmed that he had asked Thomas for some help and called him a "f*cking good person and a friend." Cavendish's win in Rome is special as his first Grand Tour victory was in Italy in 2008.

Despite criticism from Patrick Lefevere, riders at the Giro d'Italia's Monte Lussari mountain time trial enjoyed the gruelling 18.6km climb, with Alessandro De Marchi describing it as "amazing." The stage saw Primož Roglič take the maglia rosa from Geraint Thomas, with Sepp Kuss finishing sixth and praising the "beautiful place" and "sufferfest." Aurélien Paret-Peintre praised the well-organised bike change zone and said the course wasn't more demanding than a "normal" time trial. Andreas Leknessund said steep time trials "have a place" in a Grand Tour.

Geraint Thomas loses the Giro d'Italia to Primož Roglič by 14 seconds in the stage 20 mountain time trial. Thomas had raced an almost flawless Giro to this point, but the wickedly steep gradients of Monte Lussari proved his undoing. Although Thomas conceded three seconds on stage 19, it didn't feel as though he had surrendered much momentum in this contest. His 26-second buffer before Saturday's time trial seemed like it might be enough until suddenly it wasn't. In the end, he would lose the maglia rosa by 14 seconds.

Primoz Roglic attacked twice in the final 1.5km of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo climb to gain three seconds on Geraint Thomas and reduce his overall deficit to just 26 seconds at the Giro d'Italia. He has distanced João Almeida to 59 seconds and only has to beat Thomas to have a shot at overall victory. Roglic and Thomas will face off in Saturday’s decisive 18.6km mountain time trial at Monte Lussari. Sepp Kuss played a vital role in supporting Roglic and explained why he opted not to attack earlier.

The GC teams rode the start of the queen stage of the 2023 Giro defensively, with no satellite riders making the breakaway and the closest GC threat being Buitrago, over 10 minutes down. Primož Roglič set a new record on the final climb of Tre Cime di Lavaredo, but the stage was won by Santiago Buitrago from the breakaway. Geraint Thomas is ahead of Roglič by 26 seconds and Joao Almeida by 59 seconds, with the final time trial set to decide the Giro.

Geraint Thomas has revealed that he doesn't trust his main Giro d'Italia rival Primož Roglič and refused to get carried away by the possible early signs of weakness on stage 18. Thomas noticed how Roglič was riding towards the middle and back of the group on the Crosetta, but didn't alter his game-plan. Roglič attacked on the steep ramps of the Col climb deep into the stage and distanced all his GC rivals but Thomas. Thomas and Roglič are currently engaged in the final direct confrontation of this Giro d'Italia, on the big high-mountain stage to The Cime di Lavaredo.

Geraint Thomas conceded the maglia rosa to France's Bruno Armirail on stage 14 of the Giro d'Italia, but Ineos Grenadiers insisted it was part of their strategy for overall victory in the third week of the race. Thomas will start Sunday's stage to Bergamo 1:41 down on Armirail but still in control of his overall hopes, with his rivals still in the game for overall victory. Ineos Grenadiers' team directeur sportif Matteo Tosatto said the decision to let the maglia go was a sign of their confidence and control, not one of weakness.

Thomas confirmed his improving form and expressed his desire to fight for the Giro victory. His teammate Tao Geoghegan Hart was just one second slower than Thomas and remains well-positioned for the GC fight. Ineos Grenadiers dominated the first mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia, with their trio of pacemakers keeping the front peloton under control and squeezing the gap down to just under two minutes by the finish. Despite the idea of shrinking the gap to keep Remco Evenepoel in the lead being at the back of his mind, Geraint Thomas said the main goal was simply to stay in control. The Gran Sasso will be the next battle, but after two days of steady rainfall, other, more unpredictable, factors might yet make a difference.
