Experts Share Insights on Reversing Type 2 Diabetes Permanently
The feasibility of lasting remission from type 2 diabetes is a topic of debate among experts. Professor Roy Taylor argues that through low-calorie diets, remission is possible by reducing excess fat in the liver and pancreas. Studies like Counterbalance and DiRECT have shown promising results, with participants maintaining weight loss and achieving remission for at least six months. However, Professor Kamlesh Khunti disagrees, stating that behavior change is difficult to sustain long-term, and the current definition of remission is not met by most interventions. Bariatric surgery has shown the most compelling data for long-term remission, but it is not practical for everyone. The debate continues on the real-world applicability of lasting remission from type 2 diabetes.
