Widely Used Thyroid Drug May Accelerate Bone Loss in Older Adults

A study presented at the Radiological Society of North America suggests that levothyroxine, a common thyroid medication, may lead to reduced bone mass and density in older adults with normal thyroid levels. Conducted by Johns Hopkins University researchers, the study involved 81 participants over 65 and found bone loss over a 6-year period. This raises concerns about the potential overprescription of levothyroxine and its side effects, including increased osteoporosis risk, in older adults.

Thyroid Medication Linked to Potential Bone Weakening

New research indicates that levothyroxine, a common thyroid medication prescribed to older adults, may be linked to increased bone loss. The study, involving 445 participants with normal thyroid levels, found that those taking levothyroxine experienced greater bone mass and density loss. Researchers suggest that even when following current guidelines, the medication could pose risks, urging patients to regularly consult with their doctors and assess the necessity of their treatment. These findings were presented at the Radiological Society of America meeting.

Common Prescription Drug Linked to Osteoporosis Risk

New research from Johns Hopkins suggests that levothyroxine, a common thyroid medication taken by millions of Americans, may increase the risk of bone density loss, potentially leading to osteoporosis. The study found that even patients with normal thyroid-stimulating hormone levels experienced greater bone mass loss over six years. Experts recommend that patients discuss treatment risks with their doctors, as the drug may be overprescribed, particularly in older adults without hypothyroidism.

Levothyroxine Tied to Increased Osteoporosis Risk in Seniors

A study presented at the Radiological Society of North America meeting suggests that levothyroxine, a common medication for hypothyroidism, may be linked to bone density loss in older adults, even when thyroid hormone levels are within the normal range. The research, using data from the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, found that levothyroxine users experienced greater bone mass loss over a median follow-up of 6.3 years compared to non-users. The study highlights the need for regular monitoring and risk-benefit assessments for older adults on levothyroxine.

The Importance of Annual Thyroid Medication Dose Rechecks

Overmedication with levothyroxine, a medication for an underactive thyroid, may be linked to an increased risk of dementia, according to a recent study. The study found that patients taking an excessively high dose of levothyroxine had a higher likelihood of receiving a new cognitive disorder diagnosis. Endocrinologists are calling for more research and recommend checking TSH levels every year, especially in older patients, to determine if the dose of thyroid medication should be adjusted or stopped. Taking too much thyroid medication can also lead to other health risks such as atrial fibrillation and fractures.

Thyroid Dysfunction on the Rise: Desiccated Extract and Dioxin Exposure to Blame

Prescriptions for desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) to treat newly diagnosed hypothyroidism nearly doubled between 2010 and 2020 in the United States, while prescribing of first-line levothyroxine monotherapy dropped, new research has found. The nonlevothyroxine therapies were more commonly prescribed in the west and southwestern United States, while levothyroxine monotherapy was more frequent in the northwest and upper midwest, and also in states with higher densities of primary care physicians and endocrinologists. The shift in first-line treatment was unexpected, and the reasons for the increase in DTE use are unclear.
