The Italian government has banned Alfa Romeo from using the name "Milano" for its new compact sports car, prompting the company to change it to "Alfa Romeo Junior" in order to avoid controversy and preserve positive emotions. The decision was made despite the belief that the name "Milano" met all legal requirements. Virgin Galactic successfully completed its first commercial space tourism mission, flying a pair of Italian air force officers and an Italian engineer to the edge of space. The flight, commissioned by the Italian government, served as a training exercise and conducted science experiments. Unlike traditional rocket launches, Virgin Galactic's spacecraft, Unity, is tethered to a twin-fuselage airplane, which releases it at an altitude of about 45,000 feet. Unity then ignites its engine and ascends to an altitude of about 50 miles before returning to Earth. With this milestone achieved, Virgin Galactic aims to start flying its backlog of customers who have paid up to $450,000 per ticket. The flight comes amid ongoing debates about how to regulate commercial space adventures, as a prohibition on strict regulations imposed by Congress is set to expire.

Rome held its annual LGBTQ+ Pride parade with about three dozen floats, including one celebrating same-sex couples with children, amid the Italian government's crackdown on surrogate pregnancies and same-sex parents. The government recently approved a bill that would make it a crime for any Italian to use surrogacy, even abroad, to have a child. Italy allows same-sex civil unions but not marriage and doesn't allow its citizens who are single to adopt children. The courts have ordered municipal officials to register both members of a sex-same couple as the legal parents of a child born abroad, and urged lawmakers to update legislation to reflect changing social norms.

The government recently told municipal officials to register only the biological parent, and not the other parent in a same-sex couple. Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri defied the order and registered the birth certificates of children born abroad to same-sex couples. Italy allows same-sex civil unions but not marriage and doesn't allow its citizens who are single to adopt children.

Lufthansa has agreed to purchase a 41% stake in ITA Airways, the state-owned airline formed in 2020 from the remnants of Alitalia, with options to acquire the remaining 59% at some point in the future. The 325-million-euro purchase will see the Italian government make an additional 250-million-euro cash investment in the airline. The agreement, which will need to be approved by the European Union, will see Lufthansa assume control over ITA's operations even with the initial minority ownership stake.
