"Uncovering the Link Between Low Iron Levels and Long COVID Symptoms"
Scientists have potentially identified low iron levels following a Covid-19 infection as a key trigger for long Covid symptoms, affecting an estimated 1.9 million people in the UK. A study found that ongoing inflammation and disrupted iron regulation were detectable in individuals reporting long Covid months after their infection, regardless of age, sex, or infection severity. The findings, published in Nature Immunology, suggest potential ways to prevent or reduce the impact of long Covid by addressing iron dysregulation during early infection, such as controlling extreme inflammation or remobilizing trapped iron in the body.
