Cocoa and Green Tea: Natural Allies Against Stress and Fatty Foods

Recent research highlights the benefits of cocoa flavanols in combating stress and mitigating the effects of high-fat diets on cardiovascular health. A study from the University of Birmingham found that consuming a high-flavanol cocoa drink can protect the vascular system from stress-induced damage, even after eating high-fat foods. While cocoa flavanols improve vascular function, they do not significantly affect mood or cerebral oxygenation. Incorporating flavanol-rich foods like cocoa, green tea, and berries into the diet may help maintain cardiovascular health during stressful times.

The Link Between Junk Food, High-Fat Diets, and Rising Colorectal Cancer Cases in Young Americans

High-fat diets may be contributing to the increasing rates of colorectal cancer in young Americans, according to a study by researchers at the Salk Institute and the University of California, San Diego. The study found that high-fat diets alter gut bacteria and bile acids in mice, leading to inflammation and an increased risk of colorectal cancer. While the study was conducted in mice, it provides insight into the potential causes of the colorectal cancer epidemic in young people. Other factors such as sugar, C-sections, and fungal infections have also been suggested as possible causes.

Early High-Fat Diets Linked to Later Salt Cravings

In utero and early life exposure to high-fat diets results in a preference for foods that are higher in salt later in life, a new study reports. Researchers say high-fat diets increase the expression of the AT1 protein in the taste buds. This occurs as early as three weeks of age. AT1 is associated with a preference for salty tastes and researchers suggest AT1 affects salty taste preference by increasing sodium intake in taste bud cells.
