The Supreme Court heard arguments on which drug offenses trigger mandatory 15-year sentences under the Armed Career Criminal Act. The justices considered three options for determining which drug offenses count under the law, which refers to a schedule of controlled substances overseen by the attorney general. The middle ground option, using the schedule in place when the defendant committed the federal gun crime, seemed to gain traction among the justices. The case raises questions about the application of mandatory sentences and the impact of changes to the drug schedule on sentencing.
Deja Taylor, the mother of a 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher in Virginia, has pleaded guilty to federal gun charges. She could face up to 25 years in prison on the federal charges, but a negotiated plea agreement calls for a sentence of 18 to 24 months in prison. Taylor's son shot first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner in January, and Taylor was also charged in state court in connection with the shooting.

The mother of a 6-year-old who brought a gun to his Virginia school and shot his teacher earlier this year was charged with federal gun crimes. Deja Taylor, 25, was charged with two counts in U.S. court in the Eastern District of Virginia: an unlawful user of a controlled substance in possession of a firearm and making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm. Taylor's attorney said she would plead guilty to the federal charges in an agreement with prosecutors. The federal charging documents allege that Taylor lied about being a marijuana user when she signed a mandatory federal document in 2022 when she purchased a Taurus 9 mm handgun.
The Texas Senate has passed a bill that would require people who use a firearm while committing certain felonies to serve 10 years in prison or on probation if convicted. The bill would also prevent judges from offering people charged with some gun-related crimes the opportunity to have convictions wiped from their records if they successfully complete probation. Criminal justice reform advocates see the bill as a regression to tough-on-crime policies, while gun rights groups fear law-abiding gun owners who defend themselves with their weapon could face time in prison.
