"Orbital 'Sunshade': A Promising Solution to Combat Climate Change"

The Planetary Sunshade Foundation is advocating for the construction of a space-based sunshade to combat climate change. The sunshade would be installed at the Sun-Earth Lagrange-1 point and would reflect sunlight back into space, reducing the trapping of heat in the atmosphere. The foundation believes that a sunshade could be a crucial component of global efforts to address climate change, alongside emissions reduction and carbon dioxide removal. While there are uncertainties and governance challenges associated with solar radiation management techniques, the foundation argues that the sunshade has many advantages and deserves investment.

"US and Saudi Arabia Take Bold Steps to Drastically Reduce Methane Emissions"

The United States has unveiled new regulations at the Cop28 summit aimed at reducing methane emissions from its oil and gas industry by 80% by 2038, cutting a total of 58 million tonnes. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, is responsible for about a third of global warming. The US rule requires oil and gas companies to plug leaks, eliminate routine flaring, and improve monitoring. In addition, countries, businesses, and donors have raised $1 billion in funding to reduce methane emissions globally, and several countries, including Turkmenistan, have joined the global methane pledge to cut emissions by 30% by 2030. However, progress in reducing methane emissions has been mixed, with some countries showing no reduction or even an increase in emissions.

The Resurgence of Mosquitoes Poses a Major Public Health Crisis

Mosquitoes, the deadliest creatures on Earth, are posing a growing public health threat as progress in combating them has reversed in recent years. Insecticides that were once effective have become less so as mosquitoes have evolved to survive them. Malaria cases and deaths, which had been declining, are now on the rise again. The United States has even seen its first locally transmitted cases of malaria in 20 years. The situation is becoming more challenging due to climate and environmental factors. Despite previous progress, malaria deaths have increased, reaching 620,000 in 2021. Efforts are underway to develop new insecticides and innovative delivery methods to combat this ongoing threat.
