Astrophotographer creates stunning 'Giga-Moon' image from 280,000 photos.

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy has captured an incredibly detailed image of the Moon by using two telescopes and taking over 280,000 photos. The image showcases the Moon's surface with exceptional clarity, revealing even the smallest features. McCarthy spent two weeks capturing these highly detailed lunar photographs. He had previously published photographs of the Moon compiled from over 50,000 photos to produce a composite image. McCarthy has also captured Venus, nebulas, and other spectacular pictures of the universe, perfectly mixing art and science.

Astrophotographer Creates Stunning Gigapixel Moon Image from 280,000 Photos

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy has captured a 1.3-gigapixel highly-detailed image of the Moon made from 280,000 photos, which he calls the "GigaMoon". McCarthy used an 11-inch telescope with a 2.5x powermate to capture the image. He captured about 2,000 images at a time and shot the entire Moon twice to cover for any bad panels. The final image was assembled by hand in Photoshop and edited for composition, contrast, and color. The full 1.3-gigapixel image can be viewed and downloaded from McCarthy's website and Patreon.

Revolutionary Gigapixel 3D Microscope Camera Reveals Life in Unprecedented Detail

Researchers at Duke University have developed a Multi-Camera Array Microscope (MCAM) that can capture gigapixel-scale images of extremely small subjects, providing an unprecedented view of life. The MCAM is a group of miniaturized digital microscopes that acquire synchronized images and video in parallel, which are fused together using algorithms to create a final gigapixel-scale composite. The technology is being developed further by startup Ramona Optics, and the group has published their research on gigapixel imaging at a microscopic level in a research paper.

Gigapixel 3D Microscope Revolutionizes Life Imaging.

A new microscope called Multi Camera Array Microscope (MCAM) can provide researchers with 3D views of their experiments by stitching together videos from dozens of smaller cameras. The device can record 3D movies of the behavior of dozens of freely swimming zebrafish or the grooming activity of fruit flies at near cellular-level detail across a very wide field of view. The highly parallelized design of the MCAM creates its own data processing challenges, as a few minutes’ worth of recording can produce over a terabyte of data. The researchers have developed new algorithms that can efficiently handle these extremely large video datasets.
