Gavi Seeks $9B to Immunize Half a Billion Children Globally

Gavi, the global vaccine organization, is seeking $9 billion from governments and foundations to fund immunization efforts in the world's poorest countries over the next five years. The funds will help expand vaccine rollouts, including a malaria vaccine, and catch up on routine immunizations disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. "HPV Vaccine Shortage Impacts Millions of African Girls"

Merck's production problem will result in the delivery of only 18.8 million out of the 29.6 million contracted doses of the HPV vaccine to low- and middle-income countries in 2024, leaving over 10 million girls without their expected shots. This delay means that 1.5 million teenage girls in some of the world’s poorest countries will miss the chance to be protected from cervical cancer, as they will be too old to qualify for the vaccine in subsequent years. Merck has attributed the delay to a manufacturing disruption and plans to deliver the delayed doses in 2025, while also shipping 30 million doses of the vaccine to Gavi-supported countries this year, including some doses that were supposed to have been sent in 2023.

"Nigeria Leads the Way with Groundbreaking 5-in-1 Meningitis Vaccine Rollout"

Nigeria has become the first country to introduce a new 5-in-1 vaccine, Men5CV, against five strains of meningococcus bacteria, following a 50% increase in annual meningitis cases reported across Africa. The vaccine, funded by Gavi, offers broader protection than the current vaccine used in Africa and has the potential to significantly reduce meningitis cases. The rollout is a major step towards the WHO's goal of eliminating meningitis by 2030, and the international summit on meningitis in April 2024 will further assess progress and commit to accelerating efforts to defeat meningitis globally.
