Global cholera vaccine stockpile doubles, enabling preventive campaigns to restart

Global oral cholera vaccine stockpile has surged to about 70 million doses in 2025, allowing preventive vaccination campaigns to resume after more than three years. Mozambique has received 3.6 million doses, the Democratic Republic of the Congo 6.1 million, and Bangladesh 10.3 million are planned as part of a first allocation of 20 million. Vaccines are safe for people over 1 year old, with a one-dose approach used for outbreaks and two doses for longer protection. The effort is financed by Gavi and delivered by UNICEF; sustained cholera control will require investments in water, sanitation and health systems in addition to vaccination.

Gavi Seeks $9B to Immunize Half a Billion Children Globally

Gavi, the global vaccine organization, is seeking $9 billion from governments and foundations to fund immunization efforts in the world's poorest countries over the next five years. The funds will help expand vaccine rollouts, including a malaria vaccine, and catch up on routine immunizations disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Gavi aims to immunize 500 million children by 2026, despite financial challenges and stretched aid budgets. The organization has already raised $2.4 billion and plans to further expand its work, including setting up a pandemic response fund and adding new vaccines to its program.

"HPV Vaccine Shortage Impacts Millions of African Girls"

Merck's production problem will result in the delivery of only 18.8 million out of the 29.6 million contracted doses of the HPV vaccine to low- and middle-income countries in 2024, leaving over 10 million girls without their expected shots. This delay means that 1.5 million teenage girls in some of the world’s poorest countries will miss the chance to be protected from cervical cancer, as they will be too old to qualify for the vaccine in subsequent years. Merck has attributed the delay to a manufacturing disruption and plans to deliver the delayed doses in 2025, while also shipping 30 million doses of the vaccine to Gavi-supported countries this year, including some doses that were supposed to have been sent in 2023.
