Daniel Perry receives 25-year sentence for killing protester in Texas.
Daniel Perry has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for killing a protester in 2020 during racial justice and police brutality protests in downtown Austin, Texas. Perry's lawyers argued in court that he acted in self-defense, but prosecutors pointed to witness testimony that the victim never raised his weapon and said Perry could have gotten away without shooting. Texas Governor Greg Abbott has said he will pursue a pardon for Perry, but the Board of Pardons and Paroles has committed to allowing prosecutors and the victim's family to make presentations before issuing a recommendation.
