Mapping the Cosmos: Astronomers Unveil Atlas of 380k Galaxies
Astronomers have released the Siena Galaxy Atlas (SGA), a comprehensive galactic map that includes data from three wide-ranging surveys completed between 2014 and 2017. The SGA contains the distance, location, and chemical profile of 380,000 galaxies across half of the night sky, providing a comprehensive picture of the cosmos and supporting further research on galaxy formation and the structure of the Universe. The SGA is freely available to the public and offers precise data on the locations, shapes, and sizes of nearby large galaxies, as well as being the first comprehensive survey to provide data on the galaxies' light profiles.
