Phonons demonstrate quantum superposition in groundbreaking experiment.

Scientists have successfully placed a phonon, a particle of sound, into superposition, allowing it to exist in two places at once. This achievement paves the way for the use of phonons in quantum computers, which rely on the principles of quantum physics to perform calculations. This feat is similar to what has been observed in electrons and photons, which are quanta of matter and light, respectively.

Solving the mystery of neutrino mass with random matrix theory.

Researchers from Osaka Metropolitan University have used random matrix theory to explain the neutrino mass hierarchy. They analyzed the neutrino mass matrix by randomly assigning each element of the matrix and found that the lepton flavor mixings are large. The researchers were able to prove that the calculation of the squared difference of the neutrino masses is closest to the experimental results in the case of the seesaw model with the random Dirac and Majorana matrices. However, the proof is not mathematically complete and is expected to be rigorously proven as random matrix theory continues to develop.
