Maui's Neglected Power Lines and Leaning Poles: A Recipe for Wildfire Disaster
Outdated and bare electrical wires, along with leaning and deteriorating power poles, contributed to the rapid spread of wildfires in Maui. Videos and images analyzed by The Associated Press revealed that Hawaiian Electric Co. had left miles of uninsulated wires exposed to the weather and foliage. Many of the utility's wooden power poles were described as being built to an obsolete standard and were not designed to withstand high winds. The utility is now facing lawsuits and criticism for its failure to address these safety concerns and for not shutting off power during high wind warnings. Other utilities in wildfire-prone areas have taken steps to cover or bury their lines, highlighting the need for improved safety measures.
