Ahmadinejad and Ex-IRGC Commander Enter Iran's Presidential Race
Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has registered to run in the June 28 presidential election following the death of Ebrahim Raisi. However, his candidacy must be approved by the Guardian Council, which previously barred him from running in 2017. Ahmadinejad's relationship with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been strained due to his calls for checks on Khamenei's authority and demands for free elections.
