The Chilling Fate of Deceased Astronauts: Freezing and Mummification in Space
As NASA plans for long-distance space travel, the question of what happens if someone dies in space arises. Exposure to the vacuum of space without a pressurized suit would lead to asphyxiation or decompression, causing death within seconds. The body would eventually enter a frozen, mummified state and could potentially be brought back to Earth if the death occurred on a short mission. However, on a round trip to Mars, the body might be frozen or preserved in a specialized body bag until it can be returned to Earth due to the distance. Cremation or burial is not possible on Mars due to the risk of contaminating the planet with Earth microbes. Factors such as radiation and lack of atmosphere would also pose risks to astronauts' health during space travel.
