"Avian Influenza Outbreak: U.S. Egg Producer Affected, Human Infection Reported, and Pandemic Preparedness"
Cal-Maine Foods, the largest egg producer in the US, discovered bird flu in chickens at its Texas plant, leading to the culling of 1.6 million hens and 337,000 pullets. This comes amid a spike in bird flu cases across the nation, with a person in Texas recently infected after contact with dairy cattle. The company has temporarily halted production and is following USDA protocols, while also working to secure production from other facilities to minimize disruption. Bird flu, primarily transmitted among birds, has also been found in dairy cattle in Kansas and Texas, with wild migratory birds believed to be the source of the infection.
