A Russian-installed official in Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia region claimed that Kyiv had fired seven missiles at the Russian-held port city of Berdyansk, four of which were British-supplied Storm Shadow cruise missiles. The official said six missiles were intercepted, and one fell on the edge of the city without causing any casualties. The claim could not be independently verified.
Moscow accused Kyiv of using British long-range missiles to target civilian sites in Luhansk, injuring six children. The defense ministry said that the Storm Shadow air-to-air missiles supplied to Ukraine by Great Britain were used for the strike, despite London's declarations that these weapons would not be used against civilian targets. The ministry said a Sukhoi Su-24 jet that carried the missiles and a MiG-29 aircraft had been shot down.
Britain has donated Storm Shadow cruise missiles to the Ukrainian air force, providing Kyiv with a substantial step up in capability to mount long-range strikes against invading Russian forces. The Anglo-French-developed missile has a range in excess of 250 kilometers and is particularly effective against hardened and buried targets. The donation of Storm Shadow missiles means the British are the first nation to supply Kyiv with long-range weapons. The move comes ahead of a long-expected offensive by Kyiv against Russian forces occupying parts of the country.
