US Birth Rates Continue to Decline in 2022, CDC Reports.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the rate of teenage births in the United States reached a record low in 2022, continuing a trend that began in 2007. The report also showed a record low among women in their early 20s and a consistent rise in the birthrate for women 35 and older. However, the decrease among teens this year wasn’t as big as in previous years, making it difficult to predict whether the teenage birthrate might plateau or keep falling in future years. The total number of births remained below pre-pandemic levels, reflecting what may be a sustained downturn in childbearing in the United States and globally.

US Census Bureau Reports Mixed Results for County Populations in 2022

Los Angeles County continued to lose population in 2021-22, but at a slower rate than the previous year, with net domestic out-migration being the main cause. Remote work and cost-of-living increases are likely factors in the population decline. Birthrates are also declining, which can exacerbate income inequality. Experts warn that declining population can have real economic consequences and stress the need for more housing to accommodate growth.
