Beta-alanine may improve cognitive function in adults with decline.

A new study has found that beta-alanine, a popular sports supplement, could have benefits for older adults experiencing cognitive decline and depression. The study focused on 100 sedentary Israeli adults between the ages of 60 and 80, none of whom had been diagnosed with dementia or were suffering from neurocognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s. After 10 weeks, certain populations showed notable benefits, with those subjects whose cognitive scores were at or below the baseline showing significant improvements in cognitive function. Overall, subjects who took beta-alanine showed significant improvement in their scores on a geriatric depression scale.
