New research confirms that tiny fossils of Liaoningosaurus paradoxus are of baby ankylosaurs, not miniature adults, providing rare insights into early armor development and growth in armored dinosaurs, including the discovery of the first hatchling ankylosaur.
Scientists have discovered the last meal of a 75-million-year-old tyrannosaur, revealing that it had consumed two baby dinosaurs. The fossil, belonging to a juvenile gorgosaurus, provides solid evidence that tyrannosaurs changed their diet as they grew. While adult tyrannosaurs were indiscriminate eaters, hunting large plant-eating dinosaurs, the juvenile gorgosaurus hunted small, young dinosaurs. The fossil also highlights the different feeding strategies between juveniles and adults, with the juvenile gorgosaurus selectively dissecting its prey. This finding sheds new light on the predatory behavior and development of tyrannosaurs.
