Jupiter mission delayed by lightning threat.

The launch of Europe's first mission to Jupiter, the JUICE spacecraft, was delayed due to a high risk of lightning at the launch site in French Guiana. The mission, which is carrying 10 science instruments to survey Jupiter and three of its icy moons, is set to launch on Friday. The JUICE spacecraft will take eight years to reach Jupiter, using a series of planetary flybys to help give it a boost toward the outer solar system. It will be the first-ever spacecraft to orbit one of Jupiter's moons and will operate in tandem around Jupiter with NASA's Europa Clipper spacecraft.

ESA's JUICE mission faces tight 1-second launch window to study Jupiter's icy moons.

Europe's JUICE mission to Jupiter has only a one-second launch window each day until the end of April due to the spacecraft's long and winding route through the inner solar system, taking advantage of the gravity of the planets Venus and Earth, as well as Earth's moon, to reach its destination using the least fuel possible. The Ariane 5 rocket will launch JUICE directly into orbit around the sun, which will swing the spacecraft back by Earth in August 2024. If Ariane 5 misses all of its one-second launch windows in April, the planets will align for JUICE again later this summer.

Juice artwork adorns Ariane 5 rocket.

The winning artwork from the 'Juice Up Your Rocket' competition, which invited children to create art inspired by ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (Juice), has been pasted onto the nose of the Ariane 5 rocket that will carry Juice into space next month. The competition gave scientists and engineers working on Juice the opportunity to discover how the mission is seen through the eyes of children. The winning artwork is now the logo of the mission and will be visible as Juice launches into space on 13 April from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.
