Ancient Viral DNA Activity Linked to ALS Development
Researchers at King’s College London have linked alterations in ancient viral DNA, specifically human endogenous retroviruses (HERVs), to the development of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Using a retrotranscriptome-wide association analysis, the study identified specific HERV sequences associated with ALS and multiple sclerosis (MS), suggesting these viral elements may influence brain function and contribute to neurodegenerative diseases. The findings highlight the need for further research in diverse populations to explore potential therapeutic approaches targeting HERVs.
