"Blue Mesa Reservoir Bridge Closure Sparks Major Detour in Colorado"

The bridge over Blue Mesa Reservoir on U.S. Highway 50 in Colorado has been indefinitely closed due to a 3- to 4-inch crack in a steel beam, prompting a significant impact on traffic and emergency services. The closure, urged by federal highway officials, has left no available routes for emergency vehicles or local traffic to travel from Gunnison to Montrose without taking 300-mile detours that will take six to seven hours. The Colorado Department of Transportation is working to inspect the severity of the defects and find alternative routes for commuters, while Governor Jared Polis has been in touch with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg about the closure.

Navigating Red Sea Blockages: Exporters Turn to Cargo Flights for Relief

Exporters are seeking alternative air, land, and ocean routes to bypass the disruptions caused by attacks in the Red Sea, which have disrupted the key trade route linking Europe and North America with Asia via the Suez Canal. Container shipping costs have surged, prompting companies to explore longer ocean routes or intermodal transport options. The consumer goods sector, supplying top retailers like Walmart and IKEA, is expected to be the most impacted. Moving goods by air is an expensive solution, so companies are considering a combination of air and sea routes. The situation is compounded by the Panama Canal's reduced ship passages and upcoming factory closures for Chinese New Year.

Ukraine explores options amidst uncertainty in grain export deal.

Ukraine's agriculture minister has said that the country has alternative ways of transporting grain if a deal on safe Black Sea exports is not extended on May 18, and would not see that outcome as an "apocalyptic scenario". Moscow has threatened to quit the agreement on May 18 unless a list of demands is met to remove obstacles to Russia's own grain and fertiliser exports. Ukraine also exports grain via Danube River ports and has said previously that the Danube Cluster offers a viable alternative export route.

Russian Oil Exports Find New Routes Despite Embargo

Despite the Western embargo on Russian oil products, Russia exported a record volume of 3.13 million barrels per day in March 2023, a 31.2% YoY increase, with Greece and Malta accounting for 88% of exports. The EU lifted sanctions and price caps on Russian-extracted oil products produced outside the country and mixed with other suppliers' oil products. Most of Russia's 1.28 million bpd of diesel went to Turkey and Brazil, followed by Libya and Morocco, while fuel oil exports reached an all-time high of 208,000 bpd, with the main buyers being the UAE, Nigeria, Singapore, and India.
