Scientists have discovered the remains of a new species of whale, Perucetus colossus, in Peru that lived nearly 40 million years ago. Based on the partial skeleton found, researchers estimate that this ancient whale could have been even heavier than the modern blue whale, which is currently considered the largest and heaviest animal ever. While the biggest recorded blue whale weighed 190 tons, the estimated weight range for Perucetus colossus is between 85 and 340 tons, potentially making it significantly larger. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about the size and evolution of cetaceans.
