MOXIE, short for Mars Oxygen In Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, is designed to extract oxygen from the planet's thin carbon dioxide atmosphere. The toaster-sized device could potentially provide oxygen for future astronaut missions and even be used as rocket fuel. The experiment's success has prompted researchers to consider developing a full-scale system capable of generating 25 to 30 tons of oxygen to support human missions on Mars. However, funding for MOXIE is set to end at the end of the year, and the MIT lab is seeking new collaborations to continue its work.
