The James Webb Space Telescope has confirmed that "Maisie's galaxy," one of the first objects captured by the telescope, is one of the earliest galaxies ever discovered. Scientists have determined that Maisie's galaxy existed when the universe was just 390 million years old, making it one of the four earliest galaxies seen by humans. The galaxy is distinct from modern galaxies, appearing smaller and brighter with a higher rate of star formation. The discovery was made on the astronomer Steven Finkelstein's daughter's ninth birthday, leading to the galaxy being named after her.
