"Revealing the Complex Magnetic Field of the Milky Way's Inner Core"

A new map of the Milky Way's inner core, near the supermassive black hole Sag A*, has provided astronomers with a better understanding of galactic magnetism's role in regulating star formation and structure within our galaxy. The international Villanova University-led team used the SOFIA airborne observatory to take far infrared observations of the galaxy's dusty inner regions, producing the largest map ever obtained with SOFIA. The survey, dubbed "FIREPLACE," has revealed intricate interplay between dynamics and magnetic fields, shedding light on how magnetic fields affect the dynamics of galactic centers and star formation.
