"Rare Christmas Comet Brings Spectacular New Meteor Shower to Earth's Skies"

A new meteor shower, potentially originating from the comet 46P/Wirtanen, may appear in Earth's skies on December 12th, just before the peak of the Geminid meteor shower. Unlike other meteor-generating fragment streams, this shower was created during a close encounter with Jupiter several decades ago. The researchers estimate a peak of two to ten meteors per hour, and the shower will only be visible from Oceania and Indonesia. Although faint and relatively small, this rare event offers a unique opportunity for skywatchers in the right location.
