Bird flu outbreak claims lives of California condors and falcons.

Since the end of March, 20 California condors have been found dead due to the H5N1 strain of bird flu in northern Arizona. The region's population consisted of approximately 116 birds before the outbreak. The Peregrine Fund and the Southwest Condor Working Group are monitoring the flock to identify symptomatic animals and transport ill birds to Liberty Wildlife in Phoenix, Arizona, for care. California condors are North America's largest land birds and are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
