"Vaccine Triumphs in Protecting California Condors from Bird Flu Threat"

Avian flu, specifically highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI), poses a grave threat to the critically endangered California condors. In a recent outbreak, nearly 20% of the Southwest California condor population in Arizona and Utah vanished. Recognizing the potential devastation, the US Fish and Wildlife Service has requested emergency use of an avian flu vaccine to inoculate condors in case of another outbreak. This would be the first time avian flu vaccines are used on birds in the US. The hope is to prevent further losses and protect one of the country's most endangered species.

"Urgent Response Brings New Hope as Bird Flu Outbreak Claims 21 Condors in Utah-Arizona"

After a devastating bird flu outbreak that claimed the lives of 21 members of the Utah-Arizona California condor flock, there is renewed hope with recent vaccine trials. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has begun trials for a vaccine created by Zoetis to inoculate the condors. The vaccine, which was originally manufactured for poultry in Southeast Asia, has been updated and proven safe in trials on vultures. The USDA has approved the emergency use of the vaccine, marking the first time any bird species in the U.S. has been vaccinated. The incident command is expected to implement captive condor vaccinations in July.

Bird flu outbreak claims lives of California condors and falcons.

Since the end of March, 20 California condors have been found dead due to the H5N1 strain of bird flu in northern Arizona. The region's population consisted of approximately 116 birds before the outbreak. The Peregrine Fund and the Southwest Condor Working Group are monitoring the flock to identify symptomatic animals and transport ill birds to Liberty Wildlife in Phoenix, Arizona, for care. California condors are North America's largest land birds and are protected under the Endangered Species Act and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
