Salmonella Outbreak from Cantaloupes Claims Lives and Sickens Hundreds

The ongoing salmonella outbreak linked to cantaloupe products has now affected 302 cases in 42 states, with four deaths reported. Canada has also reported 153 confirmed cases and six deaths. The CDC warns that the actual number of cases is likely higher, as many people recover without medical care and are not tested. Recalled cantaloupe products include Malichita and Rudy brand whole cantaloupes, as well as cut fruit products sold at various retailers. The CDC advises against consuming pre-cut cantaloupes if the brand is unknown and urges individuals to discard or return recalled fruit products. Salmonella infections can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever, and those with severe symptoms are typically the elderly, pregnant individuals, children, and those with weakened immune systems. The investigation into the outbreak is ongoing.
