Indiana Hospital's Battle to Recover from Cyberattack

Cyberattacks on hospitals in the US have more than doubled between 2016 and 2022, with one hospital in Indiana being hit by a ransomware group demanding $3m in Bitcoin. The hospital did not pay the ransom, but the attack left them using pen and paper for medical records and notes, and sending runners between departments to take orders and deliver test results. The impacts were felt for weeks, with the emergency department having to divert ambulances and the billing department being unable to bill insurance plans. Cyberattacks pose an existential threat to the viability of hospitals across the country, especially financially-struggling hospitals or smaller hospitals in rural areas.
