Rapid spread of antimicrobial-resistant infections in war-torn Ukraine, warns CDC
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that antimicrobial-resistant bacterial infections are spreading in Ukraine due to high rates of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) before the country's war with Russia, as well as a rise in traumatic wounds and overwhelmed healthcare systems. The report highlights the detection of multi-drug resistant infections in Ukraine and surrounding countries. AMR occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites stop responding to drugs, making infections difficult or impossible to treat. The CDC emphasizes the urgent need for more capacity to prevent, detect, and respond to AMR in order to save lives within Ukraine and limit international spread.
