VBI Vaccines' Pan-Coronavirus Vaccine Offers Broad Protection Against Variants

VBI Vaccines' pan-coronavirus vaccine candidate, VBI-2901, demonstrated broad and durable protection against variants of concern in a Phase I trial involving 101 adults who had received mRNA COVID vaccines. The vaccine produced high neutralizing responses against multiple COVID-19 variants, including Wuhan, Delta, Beta, and Omicron BA.5, as well as animal coronaviruses. The protective titers remained stable at the six-month interim data point, with no safety concerns. Participants with low baseline neutralization titers showed the greatest vaccine-induced boosting effects. VBI's stock rose over 18% following the positive clinical data.

Insights into SARS-CoV-2 evolution, treatment, and prevalence in children.

This review article explores the mechanisms that generate genetic variation in SARS-CoV-2, underlying the within-host and population-level processes that underpin these events. The article examines the selective forces that likely drove the evolution of higher transmissibility and, in some cases, higher severity during the first year of the pandemic and the role of antigenic evolution during the second and third years, together with the implications of immune escape and reinfections, and the increasing evidence for and potential relevance of recombination. The article also evaluates uncertainties and outlines scenarios for the possible future evolutionary trajectories of SARS-CoV-2.

"Advancements in Understanding and Tracking SARS-CoV-2 Variants and Infection"

WHO has updated its tracking system and working definitions for variants of SARS-CoV-2 to better correspond to the current global variant landscape, independently evaluate Omicron sublineages in circulation, and classify new variants more clearly when required. Omicron represents the most divergent VOC seen to date, and its sublineages will now be classified independently as variants under monitoring (VUMs), VOIs, or VOCs. WHO will assign Greek labels for VOCs and will no longer do so for VOIs. These changes do not imply that the circulation of Omicron viruses no longer pose a threat to public health.
