"Surprising Study Reveals Alarming Increase in US Energy Sector Methane Emissions"

A study has found that US oil and natural gas facilities are emitting three times more methane than official figures suggest, causing $9.3bn in yearly climate damage. The majority of these emissions come from a small number of sites, making the issue both worse than previously thought and potentially fixable. Globally, methane emissions events have increased, with large leaks detected around the world. The study suggests that targeted efforts at the highest-emitting sites could rapidly reduce emissions, with the potential to cut emissions in half. The Biden administration has issued a new rule to cut methane emissions, and 50 oil companies have pledged to reach near-zero methane emissions by 2030.

"Green Jobs Surge: Over One-Third of U.S. Energy Workers Embrace Clean Energy"

Nearly 40% of U.S. energy workers, totaling over 3.1 million employees, were engaged in jobs aligned with the country's climate goals in 2021. Solar, wind, and electric vehicle industries accounted for half of the new hires, while coal-fired power plants saw a decline in employment. The U.S. energy industry added nearly 300,000 new jobs, with around 114,000 in clean energy technologies. Fossil fuels also saw an increase in employment, particularly in mining and drilling. The report suggests that the green workforce may be underestimated, and clean-energy jobs would be higher if states used the federal government's definition. The growth in green jobs is attributed to President Biden's infrastructure-spending laws.
