Massive Investment: Biden's $3.5 Billion Grid Upgrade Bolsters US Power Infrastructure

The Biden Administration plans to invest $3.46 billion to upgrade the U.S. electric grid, funding 58 projects across 44 states, including 400 microgrids. The aim is to tap more clean energy from wind and solar, bringing over 35 gigawatts of clean energy to the grid. The funding comes from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, and the upgrades are necessary as more than half of the country's transmission lines and power transformers were installed before the 1970s. The aging grid is increasingly strained by extreme weather events fueled by climate change, leading to widespread outages. The investment is seen as a tool for climate resilience and job creation.

"Assessing Biden's Climate Goal: Is 100% Clean Power Attainable?"

President Joe Biden's goal of transforming the US electric grid to run entirely on clean energy by 2035, a crucial part of his plan to slash emissions, may be difficult to achieve. Currently, about 44% of America's electricity comes from zero-emissions sources, and federal analysis predicts that by 2035, clean and renewable sources will make up about 86% of US energy. However, reaching 100% clean electricity by that date will be challenging due to the difficulty of decarbonizing the last portion of the power sector and the need for reliable and readily available power during peak demand. Infrastructure hurdles, such as a lack of transmission and storage capacity, also pose challenges. Wind and solar, being mature and cost-effective technologies, are expected to play a significant role in the clean energy transition, but scaling up new zero-carbon technologies will be necessary.
