The first supermoon of 2023, known as the Buck Moon or Thunder Moon, will be visible in Minnesota and is expected to be 16% brighter than an average moon. While the size difference is not significant, the brightness will be noticeable. Supermoons occur when the moon is slightly closer to Earth, and this particular supermoon will be 224,895 miles away.
The Buck Supermoon, the first full supermoon of 2023, will appear on July 2 and 3 and will be 16% brighter than an average full moon. It will reach its peak illumination at 7:39 a.m. ET on Monday, July 3. The Buck Supermoon is also known as the Thunder Moon because thunderstorms begin in early summer and is named after the time of year when bucks get their antlers. This year will see four full supermoons in a row: July's Buck Supermoon, the Aug. 1 Sturgeon Moon, the Aug. 30 Blue Moon, and the Sept. 28 Harvest Moon.
