LED Lights on Surfboards May Prevent Shark Attacks, Study Finds

Australian scientists have found that attaching LED lights to the bottom of surfboards may deter great white shark attacks by distorting the silhouette of surfers, making them less likely to be mistaken for seals. The study, conducted in South Africa, suggests that this non-invasive method could be an effective alternative to nets or drones. Researchers are now developing prototype lighting strips for further testing on surfboards and kayaks.

LED Lights on Surfboards May Reduce Shark Attacks

A study led by Macquarie University suggests that LED lights on the underside of surfboards can deter great white shark attacks by disrupting their ability to see silhouettes against sunlight. The research, conducted in South Africa, found that horizontal LED stripes were effective in making decoys less recognizable as prey. This approach could potentially reduce shark attacks on surfers, though further research is needed to test its effectiveness on other shark species like bull and tiger sharks.
