Lumbar CSF Drain Effective for Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Patients

A pragmatic randomized clinical trial including 287 patients at 19 sites in 3 countries found that prophylactic lumbar cerebrospinal fluid drainage improved clinical neurological outcomes at 6 months among patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The rate of unfavorable neurologic outcome was 32.6% in the lumbar drainage group and 44.8% in the standard of care group. Lumbar drainage lessened the burden of secondary infarction and decreased the rate of unfavorable outcome at 6 months.

Wasp stings linked to strokes in medical case study

A 60-year-old man in China suffered a severe stroke after being stung four times by wasps on his head and back. The stroke was caused by a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. Doctors believe the wasps' venom may have caused a blood vessel to burst. This is the first recorded instance of an SAH caused by wasps. Symptoms of an SAH include a sudden, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, confusion, dizziness, sudden weakness or numbness, seizures, muscle aches, and vision changes. Deaths from bee, wasp, and hornet stings are increasing in the US, with 1,109 deaths reported from 2000 to 2017.
