Gerard Piqué, former Barcelona player, has created the Kings League, a seven-a-side soccer competition staged in an indoor arena in Barcelona. The league has been a success, accruing 238 million views on TikTok in January and more than two million people watched some or all of a single round of games at the end of February on Twitch, TikTok, and YouTube. The Kings League is as much a media venture as a soccer one, favoring a “total access” approach in which even referee’s conversations are broadcast. Piqué believes that soccer needs to adapt to meet the viewers in their natural habitat, and the Kings League is his attempt to change it.
