"NASA Seeks Over-30 Applicants for Yearlong Mars Simulation Mission"

NASA is seeking healthy, non-smoking U.S. citizens aged 30-55 with a master's degree in a STEM field and professional experience to participate in a year-long simulated Mars mission in a 1,700-square-foot habitat at the Johnson Space Center. The mission, CHAPEA, aims to monitor the physical and mental challenges of living in a Mars-like environment and simulate tasks such as spacewalks, robotic operations, and crop growth. The agency plans to conduct three such missions to prepare for human exploration of Mars.

Four Volunteers to Spend a Year in Simulated Martian Habitat

Four researchers have entered a simulated Martian environment, NASA's CHAPEA habitat, to spend a year living and working in the enclosed, Mars-like world to help the space agency prepare for future missions to the Red Planet. The 1,700-square-foot habitat is located at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, and will simulate the challenges of a mission on Mars, including resource limitations, equipment failure, communication delays, and other environmental stressors. The four volunteers will carry out different activities as though they were on a mission to Mars, including simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, personal hygiene, exercise, and crop growth. The simulation will allow NASA to collect cognitive and physical performance data to give more insight into the potential impacts of long-duration missions to Mars on crew health and performance.

Four Humans to Begin Living on Mars in 2023 as Part of NASA Mission

Four volunteers will live in a simulated Martian environment for one year to test the limits of human endurance and study environmental stressors, including isolation, resource scarcity, and equipment failures. The study is the first of three planned experiments by NASA, with follow-ups scheduled for 2025 and 2026. The volunteers will be manning robots, growing their food, and tending to basic survival needs while being monitored for changes in behavior and health. The study aims to prepare for the future colonization of our solar system.
