Unveiling the Unconventional Mating Rituals of Bats: No Penetration Required
Researchers studying the common serotine bat have discovered that the males have impressively long and wide penises, with a terminal part shaped like a heart. Despite its size, the shape raises questions about how it can penetrate. Videos of the bats' copulation show the male using its penis to push against the female's vulva, staying in contact for extended periods, with some copulations lasting over 12 hours. While there is no penetration involved, the researchers speculate that the female may physically move the spermatozoa towards the fertilization site. This unique reproductive behavior adds to the list of distinctive characteristics of bats.
