NJ TRANSIT is experiencing heat-related rail equipment issues causing delays and potential trip cancellations for the next 48-72 hours. Rail service from Oceanside to Irvine has been suspended again due to a landslide in San Clemente, which occurred on Monday morning. The tracks near the San Clemente Pier are closed, affecting both Metrolink and Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. Alternate transportation is being provided. The historic Casa Romantica, located on the bluff just north of the pier, had previously collapsed in late April, causing the landmark to close. There is no estimate regarding how long the tracks may be closed for repairs.
NJ Transit rail service in and out of Penn Station New York will experience select cancelations and potentially significant delays on May 11 and May 12 due to extensive repairs to the signal system at the Portal Bridge. Morris & Essex and Montclair-Boonton Line Midtown Direct service will be diverted to Hoboken with select cancelations. All Raritan Valley Line trains will originate/terminate in Newark for the remainder of the service day. Rail tickets and passes will be cross-honored by NJ TRANSIT bus, private carrier and PATH at Newark Penn Station, Hoboken and 33rd ST-NY.
A landslide in Southern California has forced the evacuation of nearby residences, closed a historic cultural center, and halted rail service in the area. Falling debris halted rail service on shoreline tracks at the base of the cliff that are used by Metrolink and Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner. The cause of the slide has yet to be determined, but it follows a winter of extreme rainfall.
