New Guidelines Ease GLP-1 Drug Restrictions Before Surgery
The FDA has updated the labels for glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) to include a warning about the risk of pulmonary aspiration during general anesthesia or deep sedation. This affects drugs like semaglutide, liraglutide, and tirzepatide. The warning highlights rare cases of pulmonary aspiration in patients undergoing surgeries despite following preoperative fasting guidelines. Patients are advised to inform healthcare providers about their GLP-1 RA use before any procedures involving anesthesia.
