"Anesthesia Complications: The Dangers of Weight Loss Drugs"
Anesthesiologists in the US and Canada are concerned about patients taking weight loss drugs such as Ozempic and Wegovy before surgery, as these drugs can cause food to remain in the stomach longer than usual. This increases the risk of a complication called pulmonary aspiration, where stomach contents are inhaled into the lungs. Doctors recommend patients stop taking the drugs for at least three weeks before surgery to minimize this risk. The American Society of Anesthesiologists advises against taking weight loss medications on the day of surgery and getting weight loss injections a week before sedation procedures. Patients using these drugs should inform their doctors and discuss the potential risks before undergoing surgery.
